Spanish Hills Club Wedding in Camarillo
Last weekend, we had the pleasure of capturing Nichola and Alonzo’s wedding at the Spanish Hills Club in Camarillo. Both the venue and the couple were absolutely stunning, and we loved having the opportunity to shoot outside of the Central Coast!
Nichola and Alonzo started their day getting ready in Ventura. Then, they headed to Mission Basilica San Buenaventura, where they had the most beautiful wedding ceremony in the presence of family and friends. After ceremony, Nichola, Alonzo, and all their guests celebrated the rest of the day at the Spanish Hills Club in Camarillo. The whole day was elegant, romantic, and sentimental from start to finish! Also, the priest that married them married Alonzo’s parents 30 years ago!
How They Met…
Alonzo and Nichola met in 2016 at a play in Chicago during intermission. The show was “Pool (No Water).” Nichola had gone with a coworker, Eric, after blowing off a disappointing Tinder date. She almost didn’t go with Eric – mostly due to political campaign fatigue. However, she’s so glad she did!
A classmate of Eric’s from Yale, Naima, was in the show. It turned out Alonzo attended the same show to support Naima as well, independent of Eric. Neither Alonzo nor Nichola had any idea going in that the show included full-frontal nudity from the cast. Nichola noticed Alonzo across the room the second she saw him, but was nervous to make the first move or say hello. Later, at intermission, Nichola was standing alone when Alonzo’s friend and roommate asked her how she liked the show. The play’s unexpected nudity made for coy small talk, but all she could really think about was how excited she was to be introduced to the handsome stranger from across the room!
From then on, during intermission and after the show, they were glued to each other, flirting over anything and everything. For instance, they chatted poetry, politics, Lena Dunam’s Girls, and hot yoga. The energy was electric. Nichola recounts that she was smitten!
Getting closer…
After the play, Alonzo invited Nichola to hang out with him and his friends. They went on their first date the very next day! When they met, their worlds felt very different. Alonzo was a management consultant in a high rise in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. On the other hand, Nichola was a press assistant on a Senate race traveling through cornfields in Illinois. They fell in love fast, but grew in love slowly over the next several years. They did long distance for over a year and chose to start a new life together in New York City in June 2018.
The Proposal!
Alonzo proposed on the roof of their Brooklyn apartment during sunrise! He had been going up there for weeks at dawn, and Nichola thought it was for his new meditation routine. In reality, it was really to practice setting up the tripod and getting the lighting right for the proposal without her knowledge. They have several cute outtakes of him practicing, proposing to no one. How cute is that?!
When the day finally came, Nichola almost didn’t get out of bed when he asked her to watch the sunrise. But again, she’s VERY glad she did. She was in her pajamas and completely surprised.
